Bengal District Gazetteers

District Gazetteers are considered to be an important source of government information about district-level administrative units. A gazetteer generally covers all the major aspects of a district including geography, history, population, public health, agriculture, education, means of communication, and local self-government. Following the publication of the Statistical Account of Bengal (London, 1876; edited and compiled by Sir William Wilson Hunter) the British colonial administration adopted a plan to prepare independent district gazetteers based on records of the Survey and Settlement Operations.  In the first quarter of the 20th century, gazetteers of almost all Bengal districts were published. The district gazetteers, published between 1906-23, are generally known as the O’Malley Series since these were mostly authored by ICS officer L.S.S. O’Malley.
